Published research (you can find some of these research papers by following this link) shows that ozonated water can significantly reduce the presence of biomolecules in dental-unit water lines. In addition, ozonated water will quickly breakdown into plain, pure water and not leave-behind any hazardous residue like other disinfecting methods can.

Doctors in the USA have shown that ozone can kill the Swine-Flu virus, and possibly prevent infection.

Ozonated water kills bacteria and viruses on contact. The TherOzone machine safely produces ozonated water and can be a valuable asset to your dental practice. The TherOzone unit is a countertop sized machine that quickly and safely dissolves ozone gas into ordinary distilled water. For convenience, the water is contained in standard dental-unit water bottles. To use, simply fill the bottle with distilled water, attach to the unit and press start. After several minutes, the ozonating cycle ends and the aqueous ozone solution is ready to use.

T-1000 THEROZONE FEATURES & BENEFITS

  • Redundant safety systems.
Eliminates risk of exposure to ozone gas.
  • Unit will not operate unless bottle is locked in place.
  • Excess ozone gas is converted to oxygen via a special filter.
  • Self-renewing system that dehumidifies ambient air.
  • Avoids costly replacement filters.
  • Convenient delivery system.
Dispenses into standard 1 liter dental-unit water bottle.
  • Universal power supply.
Works on 110 or 220 volt power systems (adapter required for 220 volt plug).
  • Ozone is useful as a disinfectant for killing bacteria, viruses and mold spores and rendering harmless contaminates that are on instrument and device surfaces.

Ozone dissolved in water decays to oxygen, with a half-life of 30 minutes at 20°C (68°F), and at higher temperatures decomposes more rapidly. Therefore it cannot be readily bottled for extended storage for later use. It is desirable to manufacture ozone, dissolve it in water, and use the ozone/water composition (bring it into contact with the surface to be treated) as quickly as possible.

It is well known that dental-unit water lines (the tubes that connect the high-speed handpiece, air/water syringe and ultrasonic scaler to the water supply) will develop a bacterial or fungal growth on their inner surfaces, referred to as a biofilm. Tests show that, if not properly maintained, these water supply systems may have bacterial counts in excess of one million colony forming units of bacteria per millimeter of water (>1x106 CFU/ml). While bacterial counts in dental units are generally less then 1x106, they are usually far in excess of the American Dental Association (ADA) recommended bacterial levels of below 200 CFU/ml in dental water supply systems.

According to the ADA, “Dental unit water systems designed for general dental practice must be regularly maintained in order to deliver water of an optimal microbiologic quality.” In 1993, the Centers for Disease Control recommended that dental waterlines be flushed each clinic day to reduce the microbial load. The ADA suggests that in order to improve the quality of water, dental unit water lines should be treated with one or more commercial devices.

    3.   Hazards Identification
Emergency Overview: Highly reactive, can explode on contact with organic substances, especially strong reducing agents.  Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent and oxidation with ozone evolves more heat and usually starts at a lower temperature than oxidation with oxygen.  It reacts with non-saturated organic compounds to produce ozonides, which are unstable and may decompose with explosive violence.  Ozone is an unstable gas which, at normal temperatures, decomposes to diatomic oxygen.  At elevated temperatures and in the presence of certain catalysis such as hydrogen, iron, copper, and chromium, this decomposition may be explosive.

    Potential Health Effects:
Inhalation: Causes dryness of the mouth, coughing, and irritates the nose, throat, and chest.  May cause difficulty in breathing, headache, and fatigue.  the characteristic sharp, irritating odor is readily detectable at low concentrations (0.01 to 0.05 ppm).
Absorption through intact skin is not expected.
Eye Contact: Ozone is an irritant to the eyes causing pain, lacrimation, and general inflammation.
    Not a route of exposure
Aggravation of Pre-Exisitng Conditions:  Ozone may increase sensitivity to bronchoconstrictors including allergens.

    4.   First Aid Measures:

Not an expected route of exposure.
Skin Contact:  Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.

Eye Contact:  Immediately flush eyes with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes, while forcibly holding eyelids apart to ensure flushing of the entire eye surface.  If irritation, pain or other symptoms persist seek medical attention.

Acute:  May cause irritation of skin, eyes, and mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.  Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and fatigue have been associated with exposure.

Chronic:  Long-term health effects are not expected from exposure to ozone.  A partial tolerance appears to develop with repeated exposures.

    5.   Fire Fighting Measures

    Flash Point:  N/D

    Auto Ignition Temperature:  N/D

Flammable Limits in Air, % by Volume:  Upper: N/D  Lower: N/D

Extinguishing Media:  Use extinguishing media suitable for surrounding fires.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazard:  None expected.  Since ozone is highly unstable and decomposes under all conditions and is not encountered except at very small levels in the immediate vicinity where formed.

    6.   Stability and Reactivity

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Reactive singlet oxygen.
    Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur.

Incompatibilities:  Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent and reacts with all oxidizble materials, both organic and inorganic.  Some reactions are highly explosive.  alkenes, benzene, and other aromatic compounds, rubber, dicyanogn, bromine diethyl ether, dinitrogen tetroxide, nitrogent trichloride, hydrogen bromide, and tetrafluorohydrazine.

    Conditions to Avoid:  Incompatibles.

    7.   Toxicology Information

Ozone is extremely irritating to the upper and lower respiratory tract.  The characteristic odor is readily detectable at low concentrations (0.02 to 0.05 ppm).  Ozone produces local irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes and  may cause pulmonary edema at high exposure.  systematically, ozone has been reported to mimic the effects of ionizing radiation and may cause damage to chromosomal structures.  A partial tolerance appears to develop with repeated exposures.  although most effects are acute, the possibility of chronic lung impairment should be considered, based upon animal experimentation.
